Live from New York… it’s Seth MacFarlane. NBC announced on Wednesday morning that the man responsible for Family Guy will now helm the Season 38 premiere of Saturday Night Live. It will mark the first time the Comedy Central Roast Master, who had a huge summer hit with the unexpected comedy smash Ted, will host the show. (Fans can pretty much bank on the odds of hearing MacFarlane do his voices during the opening monologue.)
But perhaps the most noteworthy thing about MacFarlane’s gig — aside from the fact that a mostly behind-the-scenes star is taking center stage — is that breakout R&B artist Frank Ocean will be making his SNL debut as the musical guest for the Sept. 15 episode. Ocean made headlines last month when he came out and quickly earned admiration from those in the industry as his eagerly anticipated debut studio album Channel Orange topped the iTunes charts. Ocean toured this summer in support of the album and has already proved himself to be a force to be reckoned with on late night TV, as evidenced by his amazing appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
In addition to MacFarlane and Ocean’s premiere ep, the ubiquitous Joseph Gordon-Levitt will return to host SNL along with first-time musical guests Mumford and Sons (hopefully, JGL and Mumford will be able to revive the hysterical Mellow Show sketch sans Andy Samberg) on Sept. 22 and James Bond himself, Daniel Craig, will drop in (likely without Corgis or the Queen this time around) with musical accompaniment from Muse on Oct. 6.
That marks three men to kick off Season 38, but hopefully the ladies will be in line soon after. After all, the two best hosts of Season 37 were women. Case in point: Melissa McCarthy and Maya Rudolph. (Lena Dunham as this fall’s first female host, perhaps?)
