The Online Film Critics Society, the international professional association of Internet-based film journalists, bestowed nine awards to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in the 7th annual OFCS Awards on Tuesday.
Return of the King was named best picture; best director for Peter Jackson; best adapted screenplay award for Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh; and best original score honors for Howard Shore. The epic, the third and final installment in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, also won technical awards for achievements in cinematography, art direction, costume design, sound and visual effects.
Lost in Translation won two awards: Sofia Coppola for best original screenplay and Bill Murray for best actor, while Naomi Watts was named best actress for her role in 21 Grams. Peter Sarsgaard won best supporting actor for Shattered Glass while Shohreh Aghdashloo won best supporting actress for House of Sand and Fog.
The Brazilian drama City of God was named best foreign language film, Capturing the Friedmans won best documentary prize and Finding Nemo took home the best animated feature award.
Helmers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini shared the breakthrough filmmaker prize for their direction of American Splendor, while New Zealand newcomer Keisha Castle-Hughes won the breakthrough performance prize for her film debut in Whale Rider.
The OFCS, founded in 1997, consists of 146 Internet-based film journalists from the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia/the Pacific Rim.
