Mickey Rourke’s ready to show audiences that he’s not just an intimidating face. He’s played the down and out wrestler, the screwed up Russian super villain, and a member of the rough and tumble Expendables ensemble cast, but now he’s taking that signature scarred scowl to another level. While chatting it up on a British talk show yesterday, Rourke announced that he’ll be starting as Welsh Rugby star Gareth Thomas in a biopic about the openly gay sports icon.
This should be an interesting role for Rourke, because he’s got the tough guy part down – Rugby’s a hotbed of on the field violence – but we’ll see what he’s got when it comes to Thomas’ internal struggle with coming out. However, after what we witnessed in The Wrestler, it doesn’t seem like Rourke will have trouble tapping into inner turmoil. Details about the budding project are scarce, but I look forward to finding out more about this potentially fascinating film.
