Is 2024’s Mean Girls a remake of the 2004 film?
Yes and no. In a fascinating journey, let’s trace back to the origins of the iconic film Mean Girls. It all started with the 2002 parenting book, Queen Bees and Wannabes, written by Rosalind Wiseman. This insightful book served as the inspiration for the 2004 film, which quickly gained cultural prominence and became a phenomenon.
Building on that success, a Broadway musical was born in 2018, featuring captivating music by Jeff Richmond and compelling lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Now, looking ahead to 2024, we anticipate a fresh take on the story. Producer Lorne Michaels promises a new interpretation, while still drawing from the beloved 2004 film.
Prepare to be captivated by the upcoming film that seamlessly weaves together beloved songs from the hit Broadway musical and a selection of new and original compositions. This cinematic experience pays homage to the past while embracing the future, delivering an unforgettable time.
The storyline revolves around Cady Heron, a new student who ascends to the top of the social hierarchy, courtesy of the conniving queen bee Regina George and her clique of popular girls known as The Plastics. However, Cady’s world takes a tumultuous turn when she falls for Regina’s ex-boyfriend, triggering a treacherous game of cat and mouse.
Who will be in the 2024 movie?
Lindsey Lohan previously led the cast of the original film as Cady Heron. However, in this film, the role will be taken on by Angourie Rice. The ensemble also features several notable stars, including Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Auli’i Cravalho as Janis ‘Imi’ike (Regina’s former best friend turned enemy), Christopher Briney as Aaron Samuels (Regina’s ex-boyfriend), Bebe Wood as Gretchen Wieners (a member of the Plastics), Avantika Vandanapu as Karen Shetty (another member of the Plastics), and Jaquel Spivey as Damian (Janis’s long-time friend).
Notably, the film also welcomes back certain stars from the 2004 original, such as Tina Fey and Tim Meadows, as well as Ashley Park, who played Gretchen in the original Broadway musical adaptation.
