Lionsgate Removes Megalopolis Trailer Over Fabricated Critic Quotes

Lionsgate is retracting the trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s epic film ‘Megalopolis’ after the trailer featured fabricated quotes from well-known film critics. Released on Wednesday morning, the trailer aimed to position Coppola’s latest work as a timeless masterpiece. It drew comparisons to his legendary films like ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’.

The trailer included quotes from critics about other Coppola films, misleadingly attributed to their reviews of ‘Megalopolis’. Lionsgate issued a formal apology following the trailer’s release.

“Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for ‘Megalopolis’, a Lionsgate spokesperson said in a statement. “We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”

Prominent critics, including Owen Gleiberman and Roger Ebert, were both inaccurately quoted in the original trailer. Lionsgate has yet to provide an explanation for how these misquotes occurred.

The film features an impressive cast, including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne, Megalopolis is Coppola’s highly anticipated return after 13 years and the film has created significant buzz among fans and critics.

The story follows Adam Driver as Cesar, an ambitious architect whose grand ideals clash with those of the city’s mayor, Frank Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito. Megalopolis is a profound ‘cautionary tale’ that explores the damaging effects of greed, corruption, and narcissism on the human spirit.

The self-financed $120 million epic, ‘Megalopolis’, will open in theaters in late September.
