Holiday movies in theaters
Violent Night
This Christmas movie is more on the darker comedy side, but still fits in time for Christmas. Stranger Things star David Harbour plays Santa Clause in a parody off of the Christmas movies we know and love.
Over the years, Christmas transformed into a holiday about gifts and materialistic needs vs. the importance of spending time with loved ones. Santa is not the lovable jolly good old man we know; he’s an alcoholic and pretty disheveled. When a group of mercenaries attack the estate of a wealthy family led by a modern-day Scrooge (John Leguizamo), Santa must put his Christmas spirit to the test and save the family.
The film refuses to shy away from bloody gore and violence, with Santa fighting back the robbers with any Christmas style decoration he can find.
I Heard the Bells
The holidays are known for an influx of Christmas carols from “Santa Clause is Comin to Town,” “White Christmas,” and modern ones like “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” What about an older song like “I Heard the Bells?” In this new Christmas film, we follow Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the poet behind the carol “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.”
Go back in time as the Civil War tears Longfellow’s family apart. When all he knows is grief, he uses his small bit of hope about Christmas to write the carol of a century.
The Polar Express
The children’s classic returns to theaters for the holiday season. A young boy takes an unexpected journey on a train to the North Pole. Although the boy does not believe in Santa, he soon finds the power of Christmas. The holiday movie includes a voice cast with Tom Hanks, Daryl Sabara, Nona Gaye, Jimmy Bennett, and Eddie Deezen.
Whether you’re a child who waits for Santa on Christmas Eve, or maybe you have grown out of it, this film keeps the spirit of Christmas alive. The Polar Express is now playing in select theaters.
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Holidays don’t always bring peace, sometimes they bring a bit of chaos. Out of all holiday movies, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation captures the reality of families during Christmastime. Chevy Chase stars as the patriarch of the family, Clark Griswold, hoping to have the “perfect” Christmas with his family.
However, nothing goes right for the Griswold family, as Clark’s cousin and extended family come unannounced. Nothing says Christmas like someone getting hurt and a big breakdown. The 1989 film is now playing in select theaters.
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Now, when I think of the holiday season, my mind always goes to the Christmas-hating furry green creature portrayed by comedian Jim Carey. In the live action Grinch, we follow Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) as she befriends the Grinch and tries to include him in the Whoville festivities.
While acting as a quirky holiday movie, The Grinch also highlights the message of a recluse humiliated by society for being different. Christmas and the holidays present a time where we should all be kind to each other, no matter our differences. The film is now playing in select theaters.
The 2018 animated film is also playing in select theaters now. This movie, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the anti-hero, follows closely to the book, as the Grinch hatches a plan to act as Santa Clause to ruin Christmas for Whoville.

Love Actually
“If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is all around,” says one young Hugh Grant is this holiday rom-com. And he’s right. In Love Actually several different characters intertwine with nine different stories about the meaning of love. There’s the newly elected prime minister who falls for a junior staffer, a married man involved in a guilty affair, a young boy falling in love with a girl for the first time, and many more stories. The movie includes a stacked cast, including Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, and Bill Nighy.
While this film began the tipping point of my downward spiral of loving Hugh Grant, this romantic comedy proves that love comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it’s wonderful, and sometimes it can be painful. Love Actually is now playing in select theaters.
A Christmas Story
We all had that one gift growing up. That gift we always wanted, and life would be complete if we received it on Christmas morning. For our protagonist Ralphie, he wishes for a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Throughout the film, Ralphie gets into shenanigans at school and home.
I think we can all agree that sometimes childhood is sticky, and messy, but there are moments that we will never forget. And sometimes those moments are the gifts you receive and the meaning behind them. A Christmas Story is now playing in select theaters.
Catch the sequel, where an adult Ralphie works to give his children the amazing Christmas he had as a kid. Now on HBO Max.
The Best Man Holiday
The Best Man has a holiday sequel of their own. In the movie, college friends meet up together for the first time in 15 years. While the meeting starts off in good spirits, rivalries and romances erupt.
This is one of the many holiday movies that shows audiences no matter how busy life gets, your friends and family are important in your life. The holidays present a perfect time to remember how thankful you are for the special relationships. The Best Man Holiday is now playing in select theaters.
