Monsters & Critics reported this week that James Cameron had paid a visit to Japanese atomic bomb survivor Tsutomu Yamaguchi in Nagasaki on Dec. 22 to discuss making a film about nuclear weapons.
Variety today reports that the director has optioned Charles Pellegrino’s upcoming nonfiction tome The Last Train From Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back with his own personal funds.
Pellegrino’s book is set to hit bookstores Jan. 19. The story takes place over two days and weaves together eyewitness accounts of the Japanese civilians and American pilots who experienced the atomic explosions firsthand.
At this point, says Variety, the project is not set up at Fox or Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment.
Regarding the meeting with Cameron, M&C reported that Yamaguchi said, “I think it’s Cameron’s and Pellegrino’s destiny to make a film about nuclear weapons.”
Yamaguchi, one of the few people to have survived both the 1945 bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, passed away Monday at the age of 93.
