6 UFO And Alien Movies To Watch For World UFO Day

One of the most interesting summer holidays every year is World UFO Day! July 2 is the official international holiday for celebrating UFOs, aliens, and everything out-of-this-world.

Every World UFO Day, people from around the world gather for sky watching parties in an effort to raise awareness about the existence of UFOs. Additionally, the goal of World UFO Day is to encourage world governments to make public hidden records of UFO sightings.

History of World UFO Day

Celebration of this holiday was inspired by the Roswell incident, which occured on July 2, 1947. The “incident” saw a U.S. Air Force balloon crash at a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. After the Army initially released a statement saying that the crash involved a “flying disk” they soon retracted their statement claiming the UFO was just a weather balloon. However, in the years since there have been countless conspiracy theories that the Roswell incident was in fact a UFO sighting that the U.S. government covered up.

So before you head out for your sky watching parties, make some time to kick back and watch one of these awesome UFO movies that prove some aliens come in peace and some certainly do not.

UFO and alien movies to watch: Alien (1979)

You can’t have a list about alien movies without first mentioning Alien. Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi flick follows a group of astronauts (Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto) who encounter a deadly extraterrestrial that has been set loose on their ship. Drifting in space and months away from any civilization, the astronauts have nowhere to hide as they fight for their lives in this classic horror film. Alien was a huge hit and ranks as one of the all time best alien movies. The film spawned a massive franchise of sequels, prequels and spinoffs following its release.

There you have it, a full breakdown of the entire Alien franchise in one tweet from Kevin Smith.

UFO and alien movies to watch: E.T. (1982)

Steven Spielberg’s legendary 80s flick, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is a perfect alien movie for all ages! The film follows a young boy named Elliot (Henry Thomas) who befriends an alien named E.T. when the alien is stranded on Earth. Elliot resolves to help E.T., who desperately wishes to return home. To complicate matters, government agents will stop at nothing to capture the friendly alien. Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Drew Barrymore and Robert MacNaughton also star in this family-friendly film.

UFO and alien movies to watch: Men in Black (1997)

Men in Black proves that buddy cop comedies pair perfectly with alien movies. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith star as two government agents who work (quite hilariously) at hiding the existence of aliens from humans. The two must put aside their differences in order to protect earth from an extraterrestrial threat. Men in Black was a huge success; it won an Oscar for Best Makeup, as well as spawned multiple sequels, spinoffs and an animated TV show.

Is Men in Black one of the best movies of all time?

UFO and alien movies to watch: Lilo & Stitch (2002)

Lilo & Stitch follows a similar premise to E.T. but includes a classic Disney twist. Set in Hawaii, six year old Lilo discovers a blue animal-like alien named Experiment 626. Lilo secretly adopts the alien, begins raising him as her dog and renames him Stitch. While avoiding other aliens who have landed on earth to capture Stitch, Lilo and her newfound pet begin to share a close bond through the Hawaiian concept of ohana, which means “family.”

We also learn in the film that Cobra Bubbles, the social worker assigned to check up on Lilo and her sister Nani, has a connection to the Roswell incident — making Lilo & Stitch a perfect World UFO Day movie to watch.
