Sorry, 24 addicts. You’re going to have to wait even longer to get your next fix.
Entertainment Weekly reports that the next chapter in Jack Bauer’s life has been delayed: 20th Century Fox has thrown out a script for a 24 big screen adaptation from screenwriter Billy Ray (Breach, State of Play). Reports state that Ray’s iteration of the project would’ve continued the storyline of the rogue CTU agent from the television drama. Since the script it was apparently lit on fire, that idea must have sucked. (Just kidding, we have no idea if that happened, but because this is the world of 24 where everything that happens, happens in the most dramatic way possible — we can only assume that’s pretty close to the truth).
However, there’s still hope that the film will get made according to Howard Gordon, longtime executive producer of 24.
“There is talk of re-approaching it. I understand [director/producer] Tony Scott is meeting with Kiefer [Sutherland] to talk about ideas. People are still talking about it,” he told EW.
Back in May when 24 ended its eight-year run on Fox, to the joy of sad fans everywhere, Sutherland told EW that the series finale would indeed set up a movie.
“We wanted to create a definitive end for Jack Bauer,” he said. “Since we do have the intention to make the feature film, it would lead into that and certainly set that up. Something we’ve dealt with in the series is how the crisis always has to come to us because we don’t have time to move anywhere in a real time world. In a two-hour [movie] representation of the 24 world, planes, trains, and automobiles all of a sudden become a factor because you are not required to go scene by scene in real time. That’s something I can say I am very excited about.”
So basically, this means that the producers want to take everything that made the 24 television series an original, enthralling action show and abandon it in favor of a stereotypical, crappy action film. Sounds awesome!
