Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of Downton Abbey for season 4 as the playboy brother of Elizabeth McGovern’s Lady Grantham. The fourth season will air on PBS beginning January 5, 2014.
The period drama showcases a very English way of life, and Giamatti, like Shirley MacLaine before him in Season 3, will play an ugly American relative of those well put-together English folks. Giamatti’s character is described by the show’s producers as being “rather free-spirited” and “sure to upset the Granthams’ apple cart.” in this year’s finale.
Giamatti won an Emmy in 2008 for his role as the president in HBO’s John Adams. He’s also been nominated for a number of other awards, including an Oscar for his role in Cinderella Man.
You can also see him next summer as the Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
