2001 Blockbuster Awards

HOLLYWOOD, April 11, 2001 — Video renters have spoken.

The Blockbuster Awards handed out accolades to movie and music stars Tuesday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, based on the votes of millions of video renters the world over.

Sandra Bullock won the Favorite Actress in a Comedy award for her role in Miss Congeniality, and used her speech time to make her own plea to the video chain.

“Whoever wins this award should probably have all their late fees waived,” Bullock said. “And if that same person lost a video, like, say, White Men Can’t Jump, and they can’t find it, that should be waived, too.”

Other top female winners included Helen Hunt for Favorite Actress in a Comedy/Romance for What Women Want as well as Favorite Supporting Actress in a Drama for Cast Away; Michelle Pfeiffer won for Favorite Actress, Suspense, for What Lies Beneath; and Kate Hudson picked up the Favorite Female Newcomer award for her sweet groupie in Almost Famous.

Nicolas Cage won for Favorite Actor in a Comedy/Romance for The Family Man, while Benjamin Bratt took home the award for Favorite Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Miss Congeniality.

“Anytime you win anything for something you love doing, it’s a bonus,” he said. “Everyday I wake up and have a job, I thank God because I could be driving a bus.”

‘N Sync won three Blockbuster Awards in the music category, while Christina Aguilera took home two, one of which was Favorite Latino Artist.

Warren Beatty received the World Artist Award for his body of work.
