Richard Madden, who played the ill-fated Rob Stark on Game of Thrones, was recently featured on Men Taking Up Too Much Space on The Train, a feminist Tumblr that posts pictures of men who take up more than their allotted space on the train.
Before you dismiss the site for being overly-critical, take a look at some of the pictures. In most of them, though not Madden’s, there are women squished between the men on the train. The woman’s comfort is being sacrificed for the man’s. And though probably none of the men meant to hurt anyone’s feelings, they weren’t exactly considering how the women around them felt. Women don’t have this luxury: they must be considerate or be criticized. Spreading one’s legs on the train is a male privilege – consider how many women you see taking up too much space on the train. Madden is no worse than any of the other men on the website, but perhaps his mistake has brought attention to a small issue that represents a bigger problem.
