I think most of us associate Ethan Hawke with indie stuff. He’s done some big things, but most of the productions he’s completed have been the answers to the final question of a Trivia Pursuit game. And I think most of us believed he was happy that he’d chosen to keep a low profile in Hollywood — I think we thought that if he wanted to start getting bigger gigs, he’d start acting more and that would inevitably lead to him getting more high-profile roles. But since we couldn’t count on him for a movie every year AND since he wasn’t working very hard to get involved in the major blockbusters, it just seemed like Hawke enjoyed the fact that he wasn’t considered a leading man.
However, in a new article in Details Magazine, Hawke claims that he wishes he’d done some Batman movies because he thinks it would have been great for his career. When the question was asked whether or not he ever turned down some huge parts, Hawke said, “Superhero movies. Batman. This was after Tim Burton’s, before the bad period. I just didn’t want to go to the Knicks game and have everybody go, ‘Wow, you were a great Batman!’ That wasn’t my fucking goal in life. Now I wish I’d done it, because I could have used it to do other things.”
I assume the “other things” he’s referring to here are bigger and better movies. But I could be wrong! Maybe he thinks if he’d done some Batman movies, he could have cheated on Uma Thurman and because he’d been Batman, Uma wouldn’t have left him! I guess there’s no real way to find out how he thinks starring as such an iconic figure in a movie would have impacted or bettered his life. But let’s be real, here: that collection of scuffed shoes still would have happened.
