Fake Britney Spearses can be hazardous to your health. Example: A 37-year-old upstate New York woman is dead after rushing to catch a glimpse of a woman she apparently thought was the best-selling popster.
According to the sheriff’s department in Broome County, N.Y., the unidentified woman was one of about 100 people who gathered outside WMRV-FM radio in Union, N.Y., on Tuesday night. The crowd was the end result of a day-long promotion of an exclusive Britney Spears interview. The promotion was merely a gimmick — Britney was never really in Union. The station played it up, though, hiring a limo and a Spears impersonator to arrive at the studio at 8:30 p.m.
At about 9:40 p.m., officials say, faux Britney exited the station in true rock-star fashion — trying to avoid the masses by going out the back. The crowd caught on to the ruse, and pursued fake Britney. Amid the rush, a woman hit her head and suffered a heart attack. She died the next day in a local hospital.
Sheriff’s Detective Jason Ellis said it’s not known if the woman was shoved to the ground in a melee. The incident is under investigation.
A call to the radio station was unreturned; same with Spears’ camp.
