Poor Tom Green. Last year was a tough one for the Canadian-born comedian.
First, the home he shared with Drew Barrymore burned down. Then it was his divorce from Barrymore after only six months of marriage.
And last Saturday, Green became the first star to personally accept an award for worst film at the 22nd Annual Razzie Awards, honoring Hollywood’s very worst movies of 2001 for Freddy Got Fingered. The film actually received a record 5 nominations.
But Green wasn’t being funny about the split when he spoke to USA Today. “We got a divorce,” he told the paper. “That’s basically where it stands. I’m not going to lie about it; it’s upsetting to me. I wanted it to work.”
“She’s a good girl,” he added. “She’ll land on her feet.”
When asked about recent tabloid reports of Barrymore kissing women in bars, Green replied, “I don’t know. I try not to read that stuff.”
Green, however, seems to be on the rebound following a tumultuous year. With his new special, Tom Green’s Subway Monkey Hour, which aired Wednesday night on MTV, Green seems to be going back to his roots. Along with a film crew, Green spent 11 days in Japan, playing his old tricks on unsuspecting bystanders.
“The communication gap, obviously, was something we were able to play a lot with,” he told the paper. “It was funny. We had a translator traveling with us. That translator was this sort of well-respected translator in Japan who has worked with Walter Cronkite and Henry Kissinger.”
Green, 30, has been living in Los Angeles for two years now, where he has started a production company. He is currently working on a skateboard reality show for the WB network and a spoof movie for next year.
In his latest film, Stealing Harvard, produced by Brian Grazer, Green plays the friend of a middle-class man who turns to a life of crime in order to finance his niece’s first year at a university. Stealing Harvard, which also stars Jason Lee from Vanilla Sky and Will & Grace‘s Megan Mullally, is slated for release October 11.
