Enya made a rare red carpet appearance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night (12Feb17).
The Irish singer won commercial and critical success with her 1988 album Watermark, which propelled her to worldwide fame, helped by the single Orinoco Flow.
While Enya tends to shy away from limelight, she emerged from her County Dublin castle to attend the glitzy event held at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Sunday, wowing on the red carpet in a simple white gown with a sheer, embroidered top.
The 55-year-old had been nominated for Best New Age Album for her work, Dark Sky Island, her eighth studio album. However, she lost out on the gong to California-based group White Sun for their album White Sun II.
Enya, real name Eithne Patricia Ní Bhraonáin (Enya Patricia Brennan), hasn’t been nominated for a Grammy in a decade. She has previously won Best New Age Album four times for 2007’s Amarantine, 2002’s A Day Without Rain, 1997’s The Memory of Trees and 1993’s Shepherd Moons.
While the star is one of the wealthiest women in music with an estimated fortune of $113 million (£91 million), she has never toured her solo material. And the reclusive star has allegedly only left her home a handful of times in the last couple of years.
“She’s not exactly a barrel of laughs. You wouldn’t go for a few pints with her,” a friend told The Sun newspaper last April (16), with her uncle Noel Duggan adding, “We don’t see much of her. She lives like a queen. She is a recluse.”
