UNIVERSAL CITY, Aug. 12, 2001 — Who says the teen movement is dead?
Certainly not the screaming throngs at the 2001 Teen Choice Awards, which handed out surfboard trophies to teens’ favorites in movies, music, television and sports. Certainly not the celebrities who supported their rivals (and dates).
Take note: While reigning boy band ‘N Sync collected three awards, they lost the Choice Pop Group category to a stunned Destiny’s Child. While Freddie Prinze Jr. laments the box office of his last three films, he kissed fiancée Sarah Michelle Gellar when she was presented with the Extraordinary Achievement Award. Kisses were also swapped between winner Britney Spears and boyfriend Justin Timberlake; Female Hottie winner Jennifer Lopez and rumored fiancé Cris Judd; and Choice TV Actress winner Jessica Alba and fiancé (and Dark Angel co-star Michael Weatherly). Meanwhile, um, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter gave good-natured shoves to little brother Aaron, who won the Choice Male Artist category.
But the most surprising appearance on the telecast was by Ben Affleck, who is in the middle of rehab for alcohol abuse. Sitting next to friend (and Forces of Nature co-star) Sandra Bullock, Affleck was on hand to accept two awards for Pearl Harbor.
“I actually wasn’t going to be here, but I felt like it was important, because this actually means a lot to me because it’s voted on by you guys,” Affleck said.
Performers included Shaggy, Dream, Lil’ Bow Wow, Aaron and Nick Carter, Eve featuring Gwen Stefani and Eden’s Crush. The awards will be broadcast Monday, Aug. 20 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
