Months after Amber Heard filed a domestic violence petition against Johnny Depp and asked for a divorce, the pair have finally reached a settlement.
In May, Amber Heard alleged that the actor became violent and threw a cellphone at her face. Queue a leaked video of his drunken rage, some photos of a gruesome incident involving Depp chopping off the tip of his finger, and millions of people calling Heard a crazy gold-digger. Finally, it looks like Heard will be able to move on from this horrible, emotional event.
According to TMZ, Heard is walking away with $7 million from the settlement, rather than the $8 million that was on the table. Heard also withdrew her request for a restraining order. She dismissed the case with prejudice meaning she can’t ever re-file it.
While some people may say that withdrawing her restraining order means she was probably lying about the abuse, it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with her claims. This was a long, emotional journey for Heard who faced massive public scrutiny. It is likely that she just wanted to settle and get the whole thing done with, especially after she was picked apart in a grueling seven hour deposition.
The joint statement released by Depp and Heard also states that no false claims were made to extort money. It’s important to remember that both Depp and Heard had to sign off on this statement. It read:
“Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains. There was never an intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity.”
Considering the drama surrounding the pair, it’s kind of amazing that they released a joint statement. Especially one that says Amber’s claims weren’t false but states that Depp didn’t intend to hurt Heard (if you recall, she did claim that he was wasted during all of the violent events). It’s interesting that the statement definitely boosts Amber’s image, after she was publicly reamed for filing claims, but doesn’t really do much to clear Depp’s name. With all the videos and photos, it’s hard for Depp to look totally innocent, but either way, Heard can finally move on.
